Hershey

The Hershey Company, headquartered in Hershey, Pa., is a global confectionery leader known for bringing goodness to the world through its chocolate, sweets, mints and other great-tasting snacks. Like their founder Milton Hershey, Hershey believes that strong company performance is intrinsically linked to operating fairly, ethically and sustainably, both in their own operations as well as our supply chain. Hershey’s support for cocoa communities goes back 50 years and continues today.

Hershey began partnering with Source Trust in 2012 in order to deliver their Learn To Grow programme in Ghana. Since then, our partnership has grown and we are now working with Hershey in Ghana and Nigeria reaching even more cocoa farmers.

Ghana

In Ghana, our programme aims to improve farmer resilience and increase farm-level cocoa productivity, in order to improve cocoa farming community livelihoods. In order to achieve this, the programme seeks to engage and support women as farmers, as well as increasing food crop production. Unique to this programme is the use of unique mobile technology to improve service delivery efficiencies.

What we’ve achieved so far:

  • 12 societies empowered to produce food and supplementary sources of income.
  • 23% of recently elected cooperative executives are women
  • Over 89,000 new cocoa seedlings sufficient for replanting approximately 89 ha of cocoa land

Nigeria

Our Nigerian programme with Hershey seeks to enhance the lives of cocoa farmers by increasing the number and quality of productive cocoa plants on their farms, which will in turn enhance their incomes. The programme also aims to enhance incomes by building the capacity of farmers to produce certified cocoa; it does this through a training curriculum and practical hands on demonstrations.

What we’ve achieved so far:

  • 41 nurseries have been established to distribute over 800,000 much needed new cocoa plants
  • 9 farmers have converted their farms into Demonstrations Farms to show other farmers ‘best-practice’
  • 1,479 new trees have been planted on cocoa farms to increase shade and biodiversity

The programme in Ghana is partially funded by the WCF Cocoa Livelihoods Programme.
The programme in Nigeria is also funded by IDH – The Sustainable Trade Initiative.
